matchup between the las vegas raiders and the detroit lions. ♪ go big or go home ♪ >> janai: good morning, america. happy sunday. thank you for starting your week off with us, but it is one on a sad note as we deal with the shocking news overnight about the death of actor matthew perry. the "friends" star who famously played chandler bing passing away at 54 years old. >> whit: and law enforcement sources say that perry died in his pacific palisades home. police vehicles lining his street overnight. firefighters and paramedics responding to a call at his house. the official cause of death though, is still under investigation. >> gio: and just days ago, perry posting this photo of himself soaking in a hot tub. overnight, fans gathering outside the greenwich village location where the "friends" characters lived, and the official "friends" instagram account posted this.

quote, he was a true gift to us all. abc's chris connelly is in los angeles with more on his life and career. chris, good morning. this is such a heartbreaker. >> reporter: and good morning to you too, gio. such a sad loss. with his performance on "friends," matthew perry was welcomed into the homes and hearts of generations of tv viewers. while he earned their affection by playing chandler bing, he earned enduring admiration from his peers and the public by sharing his decades-long struggle with addiction. shining a light and wanting to give others hope. >> could she be more out of my league? ross, back me up here. >> he could never get a woman like that in a million years. >> thank you, buddy. >> reporter: for ten seasons on the hit series "friends," matthew perry played chandler bing. >> could we be more white trash? >> well, i loved chandler. i loved the show and i also knew, remember this, because it's going to be the best time of your life.

>> reporter: perry's comic skills and fresh-faced appeal made him a fan favorite. >> i'm hopeless and awkward and desperate for love! >> reporter: even as chandler remained relationship-challenged through much of the sitcom's run, a quality "friends" producers knew perry himself had. >> they took us all separately to lunch and said, tell us about you, and i said, well, i'm not an ugly guy, but i have a lot of trouble with women, and that's what chandler became, you know? >> reporter: hired for the show at 24, featured in all of the series' 236 episodes, perry would shine even brighter after his character was coupled with courteney cox's monica. >> i just want to be married again. >> and i just want a million dollars. >> reporter: the show's success made him a breakout star in the '90s, but perry was more than "friends." his guest-starring role on "the west wing" earned him acclaim showing he could handle drama

each day. >> i guess the weirdest thing i did is on sundays, i would go to open houses and go to the bathrooms in the open house and see what pills they had in there and steal them. and i think they thought, well, there's no way that chandler came in and stole from us. >> reporter: perry describing to our george stephanopoulos how he discovered his addiction. >> you didn't know? >> i didn't know. i was -- i had to keep it a secret because i didn't understand really what was going on, but, you know, there were certain lines in the big book of alcoholics anonymous that made me more aware. >> reporter: for decades, addiction would put perry through hell, leading to severe weight loss and more than a dozen surgeries. there would be countless months in treatment, as time and again he sought help. >> your disease is just outside just doing one-armed push-ups just waiting, just waiting to get you alone because alone, you lose to the disease, and now i finally feel okay and feel like i've got some strength. >> what's your dream day? >> playing games, watching movies. i want to work out.

i want to play pickleball. i play it almost every day, and that's why this tan is real and not fake. >> reporter: matthew perry was found dead saturday afternoon at his los angeles home. he was 54. those who worked alongside him and knew him, sharing their grief on social media. maggie wheeler, a frequent face on "friends," what a loss. the world will miss you, matthew perry. i feel so very blessed by every creative moment we shared. morgan fairchild, who played chandler's mother on "friends" posting on x, i'm heartbroken about the untimely death of my son, matthew perry. the loss of such a brilliant young actor is a shock. i'm sending love and condolences to his friends and family. selma blair, my oldest boyfriend. all of us loved matthew perry and i did especially. every day. i loved him unconditionally, and he me. and i'm broken. brokenhearted. sweet dreams, matty. sweet dreams. truly beloved by his hollywood

peers as much as he was by "friends" fans. perry said that he told his story in all of its grim detail and personal devastation because he hoped that it might help others. >> i don't like talking about it, but i know it's going to help people to talk about it. >> reporter: also on social media, the voices of those who were helped by his story, encouraged or moved or made to feel less alone in the world. for that accomplishment and even more so for all the laughter he brought into being, matthew perry will be mourned. he'll be missed, and he'll be remembered, janai. >> janai: he absolutely will. it feels like the end of an era losing one of the "friends" friends, and chris, i mean, in that interview with diane that was just about a year ago. he talked about he had so many other interests including pickleball. >> reporter: he was a big sports guy out here. big fan of ice hockey and the l.a. kings. hosted the 2005 espys. was a nationally ranked

tennis player as a junior, and "friends" fans might remember seeing that toronto blue jays baseball cap in the back of some of chandler's shots. fans feeling the loss today. whit? >> whit: thank you so much. such an incredible loss this morning. we do move on now to other news today and the war in the middle east as israel launches a second stage of its offensive against hamas in gaza. for the latest overnight, let's go to abc's matt rivers near the gaza border. matt, good morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, whit. we're less than a half mile from the border with gaza just there behind me, and in the time that we've been out here, we've heard consistent outgoing artillery fire from the israeli side. we've heard jets flying overhead striking targets there in gaza. just behind me. all of this as israeli defense forces have sent more troops into gaza overnight, joining those already there.

a new phase in this war has begun. this morning, israel saying it has begun a decisive new phase in its war with hamas, striking 450 targets in the last day alone. israel releasing these videos, some of which they say show what they call an expansion of ground activities inside gaza. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu warning this will be a, quote, long and difficult war. communications in the gaza strip slowly beginning to come back online after being completely severed in intense israeli bombardments over the weekend, but getting in touch with those inside, still difficult. many cut off from the world. among those trapped in the strip, around 600 or so americans including abood okal, his wife, and his 1-year-old son. >> last night was the hardest we've experienced so far. probably the most noticeable and scariest of all is the sound of missile whistles that you could hear flying over the house. >> reporter: more than 7,000 people have been killed in gaza according to hamas-run local health authorities. more than three weeks after hamas killed at least 1,400

inside israel, taking more than 200 hostages, now inside gaza. prime minister netanyahu meeting with families of some of those held captive on saturday. getting them home, he said, a top priority. still many fearful of what a ground invasion might mean for the hostages in gaza. this crowd gathering in tel aviv, chanting, return them now. a looming scream marching each passing second they have been gone. >> there's so many people here who have loved ones who are still in gaza. the desperation, the sadness. it's so palpable. >> reporter: this woman's brother and nephew taken by hamas on october 7th. >> there's no victory picture without the kidnaps. bring them back to us. to hug them now, not tomorrow. now. >> reporter: and in addition to the countless casualties that are being recorded in gaza right now, we also know from the idf,

two of their soldiers were injured in this fighting overnight. meanwhile, elon musk saying that spacex will attempt to provide some of its starlink internet connection systems to internationally recognized aid groups operating in gaza after connections were severed there over the weekend, gio. >> gio: all right, matt, thank you so much for your reporting there, and let's bring in abc's chief global affairs correspondent and "this week" anchor martha raddatz. martha, good morning to you. thank you so much for being here. let's go ahead and start with israel's short-term goal. of course, that's the elimination of hamas after that october 7th attack. at the same time though, we are witnessing the pain and the suffering of innocent gazans who are caught in the middle here. you have been covering the region for decades now. can israel succeed in getting rid of hamas without tensions growing even more? >> martha: that is the big question, gio, and this is not going to be short-term. even benjamin netanyahu says this could be a long and bloody fight. it could be months and months or even longer.

look at the u.s. history in places like iraq and afghanistan. so the tensions in the region will most certainly rise. it's something the u.s. and the administration is very concerned about, gio. >> gio: and speaking of this administration, there was that key moment, martha, this week when the u.s. launched strikes against two bases in syria believed to be funded by iran after attacks on u.s. troops in iraq and syria. america's trying to walk that very delicate line while also protecting troops. what should that signal to americans in the world? >> martha: well, i think they are walking exactly as you say, gio, that fine line, and this was frankly, quite a limited response. they hit two weapons facilities, and they were -- a drone attacked the very next day. so whether they're getting these iranian-backed proxies, the message of deterrence is still unknown. it does not look like it at this point, but the message is

where he was speaking and his departure from the race means that the gop primary field is a little less crowded. >> so after much prayer and deliberation, i have decided to suspend my campaign for president effective today. >> reporter: vice president mike pence suspending his campaign during remarks at a gathering of the republican jewish coalition in las vegas. pence, the highest-profile candidate to exit the race so far, telling attendees he's leaving with no regrets. >> i will never leave the fight for conservative values. >> reporter: without him, there are nine republicans vying to become the gop's presidential nominee. some offering kind words for the former vp like former u.n. ambassador nikki haley. >> he has fought for america, and he has fought for israel, and we all owe him a debt of gratitude. [ applause ] >> reporter: former president donald trump later took the stage at another event saying the former vice president should once again endorse him. >> he should endorse me. you know why? because -- because i had a great, successful presidency, and he was the vice president.

>> reporter: now, pence's remarks seem to leave open the possibility of endorsing another candidate, but so far no word on if or when such an endorsement could come. janai? >> janai: probably unlikely it will be the former president. thank you so much. four days after the mass shooting in maine, fear now finally yielding to grief. a vigil was held overnight for the 18 killed a day after police reported finding the suspected gunman dead. abc's trevor ault joins us from lewiston where he's been for days this week, and we're also learning new details about the suspect's visit to a gun shop. trevor, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, janai. so that two-day manhunt essentially put a pause on any kind of communal mourning. at least now they can bring this long healing process together. and this morning, we're learning, leading up to this massacre, this suspect tried to buy even more gun equipment. it could have made him even more dangerous. overnight, the community of

lewiston, maine, finally in mourning together, holding multiple vigils. friends and family embracing each other, remembering those 18 lives lost after 48 hours spent on lockdown until the killer was found. >> this is great to see everybody coming out in the community and really supporting all these victims' families. >> reporter: angelo giberti says his brother tom was shot at the bowling alley, and is still in the hospital. >> tom was able to get these kids out of the line of fire, and ended up getting shot himself. he was willing to step up for someone and that's exactly what tom did. >> reporter: and this morning, abc news has learned exclusive new details about the suspect. a gun shop owner telling us just a few months prior to the massacre, robert card tried and failed to buy a gun silencer. >> just following the proper procedures. >> reporter: this is the lewiston city council president and the owner of coastal defense. he says in august, the suspect ordered a silencer and it was shipped to the closest dealer which was rick's store.

but the shooter had to fill out this 4473, a firearms transaction record form which asked in part, have you ever been committed to a mental institution? to which he checked, yes. that answer under maine's yellow flag laws prevented the gunman from getting the suppresser. >> i said, i'm sorry, mr. card. we cannot give you this because of these reasons, and he was very cooperative and he says, oh. that's a mistake, and i'm sure i can get it clarified. >> reporter: and authorities have said those first officers responded to the scene in less than two minutes because they heard the gunshots. it's certainly possible if the suspect had that silencer, this could have been even more deadly. whit? >> whit: trevor ault for us. thank you so much. we appreciate your reporting throughout on this story. let's turn now and get a check of the weather. brittany bell is in for somara this morning from our new york station, wabc, and we got snow on the way in some parts of the country. >> brittany: we do. so what a difference a day

them. >> whit: oh wow. i used to swing from the goal post for sure. i believe that. taking it down. >> janai: all right. back to the news, we start this half hour with disgraced attorney alex murdaugh's latest attempt to get a new trial in the murders of his wife and son. murdaugh raising allegations of jury-tampering by the county clerk. abc's ike ejiochi has those details for us this morning, and the motion just filed. ike, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. attorneys for alex murdaugh are accusing county clerk rebecca hill of improperly counseling jurors to disregard testimony, even pressuring them to reach a quick verdict. this morning, new developments in convicted killer alex murdaugh's fight for freedom. murdaugh found guilty and given two consecutive life sentences for murdering his wife, maggie, and his son, paul, but now, his attorneys officially requesting a retrial filing a 65-page

motion that details claims made about county clerk rebecca hill saying, murdaugh was denied a fair trial. they're accusing hill of extensive, deliberate, and self-interested jury tampering. his attorneys telling "gma" -- >> we have sworn affidavits and interviews -- sworn affidavits from two jurors and interviews with other jurors to indicate that the court -- for instance, went into the jury room prior to us presenting our case saying, don't be confused. don't be persuaded when alex murdaugh was testifying. don't believe him. >> reporter: murdaugh's attorneys alleging hill pressured the jurors to reach a quick verdict and that she invented a story about a facebook post to remove a juror she believed might not vote guilty. all to secure for herself a book deal and media appearances that would not happen in the event of the mistrial. hill recently publishing that book "behind the doors of justice: the murdaugh murders." even appearing on the netflix's documentary.

>> i had a feeling from our time together with the jury out at mozelle, that it was not going to take our jury long to make the decision in this case. it's just called that women's intuition. >> reporter: murdaugh had a remarkable fall from grace. his family representing a legal dynasty in coastal south carolina where three successive generations controlled the local prosecutor's office. murdaugh seen here, crying in court during the criminal trial. >> i would never intentionally do anything to hurt either one of them. >> reporter: now murdaugh's fate will be decided by a judge. >> there are very serious allegations here that if substantiated could warrant a new trial, but it's on the government to show that even though there was contact, it did not improperly influence the decision of the jury. >> reporter: now, if a judge does in fact find there was tampering, legal experts say there could be additional criminal charges that could be

levied against rebecca hill who was alleged to have done the jury tampering. we've reached out to hill's attorneys but we've yet to hear back. >> gio: thank you so much for that. now to an incredible survival story at sea. a man rescued after spending two weeks adrift in a tiny life raft. abc's zohreen shah has more from the boaters who found him. what a fascinating story this is. >> reporter: it is, gio. it's a big sigh of relief after the one man was found alive and the fishermen who found him say he was very weak surviving on just some biscuits and salmon he caught, but he made it. after two harrowing weeks lost at sea, this missing mariner finally found. now two hero fishermen speaking out about that rescue. >> at first, i just thought it was a bunch of debris. >> reporter: ryan planes and his uncle, john, were on a fishing excursion when they came upon the life raft. the u.s. coast guard says that on october 12th two men set out on a fishing trip on a 43-foot boat named "evening." they were supposed to return back three days later.

>> they said they took a bad wave and the boat flipped over and turned on its side. he got out, and he was hanging onto the side of the poles of the boat there, and he was able to open the life raft and get in. >> reporter: coast guard crews mobilizing, putting every resource they could into finding the mariners. >> searched over 14,000 square miles for approximately over eight hours, utilizing two different types of aircraft. >> reporter: but nothing turned up. the search eventually suspended until ryan and john found him floating on that raft on thursday. >> he gave me a hug, and then he was pretty -- pretty -- so happy that we picked him up. >> there you go, buddy. >> reporter: a happy ending for that sailor, and now the fishermen are turning their focus to his partner who is still missing at sea. the coast guard made the very tough decision to call off that search a few days ago, but the fishermen say they are looking out for him too, and they are
